Let’s get you introduced to everyone, shall we?!
Hi, I am Lilly Black, I am that feeling you get when you enter a dark place where you know you should not be, but I also like cupcakes, rainbows, and chinchillas.
What prompted you to pursue a career as a writer?
Masochism. Kidding. I’ve been driven to write books for as long as I can remember, and have always been an avid reader. When I was a kid, the local library had a note from my mother on file to not argue and just let me check out whatever I wanted because I had very little interest in the children’s section, and some of my fascinations seemed to disturb a lot of the staff.
Do you have any special writing habits?
Bad ones. I have multiple screens open when I write because I have to flit around from one thing to the next to get anything accomplished. If I make myself sit still and focus only on the writing, I don’t usually like what I end up with.
When you write a new book, do you already have the whole story in mind or do you elaborate it along the way?
I start knowing the beginning, the backstory, and the ending but not necessarily everything that happens in between. I let the rest of the story evolve as I go along, and sometimes I pleasantly surprise myself with things that fit together so well despite that I didn’t plan or expect it. I also have a bad memory, so sometime I’m surprised when I reread my work, too.
In your opinion what is the best book you have written? What’s your favourite book ever?
I honestly don’t know how to answer this. I am inclined to pick something from my current series, Gods of Earth, because it’s paranormal and darker than my Jaded Series. I like dark things, but if I force myself to pick one book at this moment, I am going to say Precious Jade, the 3rd book in my Jaded series. It’s got rock stars, sex, murder, and in the dedications, I chickenbutted my ex, winning that war in print for all time.
For favorite book ever is something I cannot narrow down. I love Frank Herbert’s Dune and I’m a huge fan of Brian Lumley. If stick with the genre I write in, my favorite would have to be Keira M. Belle’s Storms of Summer. I am hard to please when it comes to reading because I am always predicting what comes next, but I find Keira delightfully unpredictable.
How do you feel after writing a book?
I have a sense of accomplishment coupled with something akin to post partum depression. I usually have to dive straight into the next one to cure it, which makes me bad at promoting the last one.
Tell us about your latest book and please put the link so our readers can find it.
The last one I published was a novella called Sugar Magnolia. It’s a departure from what I usually write because no one dies and there’s less sex, but I still feel like it captures my tendency to write about broken people even if Roman and Ellen are less broken than most of my other characters. It’s about a woman who sees herself as undesirable and decides to settle for a man who doesn’t really love her, then she meets the man of her dreams on the flight to her destination wedding. https://www.amazon.com/Sugar-Magnolia-Lilly-Black-ebook/dp/B08BMJQ9DL
Do you have a new release? When? We want details.
My next release should be the 3rd book in the Gods of Earth series, but I have put it aside to work on another novella. It’s a ghost love story inspired by personal experience with loss, but it is definitely a work of fiction. One thing I am really excited about is that I got permission from one of my late husband’s favorite musicians to quote one of her songs at the beginning of the book. It was a bittersweet day when I was communicating with her because I couldn’t stop thinking about how cool my husband would have found it that we were talking on a professional/artistic level. .
