Our Authors Interview

Let’s get you introduced to everyone, shall we?!

Hi, I’m T. E Kessler (the penname of Louise Wise), and I write sci-fi for over the 18+ readership. I wanted to explore the idea of aliens arriving on earth without us humans knowing so imagine the concept of thinking that our neighbours, who are a little odd (or in the case from the books, downright dangerous!), are aliens. I changed my author name to T. E Kessler because my new range of books are tailored for adults, unlike those written under Louise Wise, where most ages can enjoy them.

What prompted you to pursue a career as a writer?

I’ve always written stories, and as Louise Wise, my stories could be seen in women’s magazines. I penned many books (most will never see the light of the day!) in the hope that an agent or publisher would take it on, and like most authors, I became disheartened by the rejections. But then I had a rejection letter from an agent who’d sent my typescript off to Simon & Schuster and S & S left their notes tucked inside the typescript, to this day I don’t know if the agent left them in on purpose or not because, although the notes were rejecting the book, they were full of praise labelling me as ‘up and coming’ and the book as ‘a breath of fresh air’. Other notes were ‘I needed to grow’ and ‘needs advising’ etc., this was over thirty years ago, and I’d like to think I’ve ‘grown’ now. Anyway, those notes urged me to continue into publishing as an Independent author and today, EDEN is one of my best sellers and the reason, I began to write my new series JELVIA: NOT HUMAN.

Do you have any special writing habits?

I’m not sure if they are unusual or not, I write in sections. Authors are daydreamers, and usually, when we daydream, we dream in scenes, so I write those scenes down. The first draft of any book consists of scenes and are labelled ‘car crash’ ‘kidnapped’ ‘sex scene’ etc. Sometimes the scenes merge to become chapters, and that’s when I get excited and see a book emerging. Then if the characters come to life, I know I can make a book out of it.

When you write a new book, do you already have the whole story in mind or do you elaborate it along the way?

I have where I want the story to go in my head. The characters are developed along the way and as they become ‘real people’ the story can, and usually does, change but the overall the ending is often what I have in my head—it’s just taken a different route to get there.

In your opinion what is the best book you have written? What’s your favourite book ever?

My readers would tell me it’s Eden, one of my best sellers writing as Louise Wise, but my personal favourite is my time travel Wide Awake Asleep, also as Louise Wise. T E Kessler has only written three books in the Jelvia: Not Human series, and from that series my favourite is Spider. I have a soft spot for the Jelvia, Yash, he’s brutal in the book, but he’s one creation I love. We all love a baddy, don’t we?

How do you feel after writing a book?

I feel like everyone should understand my joy and elation, but when I realise, they don’t, I feel a little flat. Then I get over it, and silently celebrate my success feeling all warm and snuggly inside. Then I get cracking and begin the next book.

Tell us about your latest book and please put the link so our readers can find it.

SPIDER by T E Kessler is the third book in the Jelvia: Not Human series. The series can be read as a standalone novel, but obviously, the reader will have a better understanding of the story if they read from book 1 onwards. ‘Jelvia’ is an alien nation, and they live alongside us in the 21st century. They are stronger, bigger, venomous and an enemy of the human, but we humans carry on under the belief that Jelvias have evolved alongside. In short, the Jelvias being here is something we put up with as we carry on with our ordinary lives. Beth is the main protagonist in SPIDER. She’s a down-trodden character, and as we enter her story, we learn that she’s had a tragic life. When she was a child, her family were involved in a car accident by which her brother died and her mother, the breadwinner of the family, became permanently brain-damaged. Her father, unable to cope with life’s challenges became an alcoholic. Beth had to be a mother to her baby sister and a nurse to her mother all while her father drank away the family finances. So, this is the Beth we see when the story opens. She’s just in her mid-twenties but already has dealt with so much, then her sister, now 17, is kidnapped by Jelvias. And that’s the crux of Beth doing something stupid: She makes a deal with a Jelvia—bring her sister back, and he can have 24 hours with Beth. With Jelvia: Not Human books 1 and 2, we see the nice side to Jelvias. In book 3, we definitely see a cruel and nasty side. Find the book here: viewbook.at/spider
